20200125 Haseley Centre, Feeders, Orchard, Siskins and High Level
An excellent turnout (thank you, all) for this rather later start but a disappointing day. By 0925 we had opened all nets including two 60s and High Level on the Siskin patch, 430 ft of net in all, using sound lures of crests and mixed warbler hoping for blackcap or chiffchaff. I had thought that the overcast skies and a rising temperature over the day would give us a reasonable catch improving as the day went on, but it was not to be. Despite the initially suitable weather birds were few from the start. Before 12noon as the recent stable High disintegrated in favour of the front of the next Atlantic Low sequence a chilling southerly wind was interfering with High Level and one of the Siskin nets and we were keen to cut our losses. Once again time for teaching was valuable. Note that for the third session running we have caught significant numbers of unringed Blue Tits, today five against four retraps. How wide an area are we sampling from I muse?
All nets are down and it is difficult at present to predict the next suitable time for another session. Bear in mind that the excellent IWNHAS Recorders’ Conference is next Saturday afternoon 1st Feb (though we could run a session in the morning if the weather sets fair).
